Joined to Him – The Purpose of the Body

In my previous post titled The Body we saw that we are members of Christ’s body. When Jesus spoke to Paul on the Damascus road He asked Paul why he was persecuting Him and at the time Paul was persecuting the believers. We see that Christ makes no distinction between believers and Himself. In fact we as believers are a corporate expression of Christ here on earth… wow! Paul then goes on to write different letters to various groups of believers and in many of them He explains how they are part of Christ’s body.

At this point let us take a step back. We know that we are members of Christs body and that together we are His corporate expression, but what is the purpose and function of Christ’s body? Below an excerpt from a book called “From Eternity to Here” by Frank Viola:

God’s passion for His Son drove Him to create living beings who would behold the beauty of His Son. And because the Son was invisible in His preincarnate state, He willed to prepare a special instrument through which the Son would find visible expression in the earth. This was the first impulse of the church.

Please note that in revealing the Son, God the Father would also be revealing Himself. For He and His Son are one. Surprisingly, the instrument that God chose to manifest His Son to His creation was not what we would imagine. It wasn’t through a great ethical code. It wasn’t through a set of laws. It wasn’t even through a sacred text. The invisible God chose to reveal His Son through a human body. He wrapped Him in our own skin and displayed Him to the world through human hands, human feet, human ears, and a human mouth.

Our physical body gives our personality an expression. In the same way, Christ’s body made the invisible God visible. Humanity could finally experience and see the true nature and person of God in Christ! In Hebrews 1:1-3 we see this fact coming to light.

In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word.

The Son is the exact representation of God. When we look at Christ’s bodily life we see God expressing His heart and nature towards people. We can be sure that humanity could never know and embrace God apart from Christ. The glory of Christ’s incarnation is that God fully embraced humanity and by doing so, humanity could fully embrace God.

Now that we have taken a step back, lets step forward once more. The indwelling life of Christ through the Spirit has brought us into a glorious union with our Lord so much so that His very life and nature can be displayed through us. When Christ ascended, His glorified body and life ascended with Him. When He later poured out the Holy Spirit, He poured His life, person and nature into His followers. Since they now had what Paul termed the “Christ in you” He could express Himself through them, which made the believers His body!

What a blessed privilege it is that we are part of Christ’s body on this earth so that the world can know and experience Him. We truly are “Joined to Him” as His body. Praise the Lord!

  1. Praise the Lord for His body! Now the world may truly know him. May we come to understand the enormous privilege we have been given to be a part of it. To be the very vessel through which the all powerful God of glory and love reveals Himself to the World that he has made. May we realise how much He desires to express Himself and come to the knowledge that our choices determine the nature and freedom of that expression. Wow, what a serious responsibility. A wonderful eternally satisfying one, but still very serious. May the lord have what he desires!

  2. […] us – gives Christ an expression to the world. (For more on the purpose of the body click here.) However, in order for the purpose of the body to be fulfilled, there needs to be a body that is […]
